What is trauma?

Trauma is when we experience very stressful, frightening or distressing events that are difficult to cope with or out of our control. It could be one incident, or an ongoing event that happens over a long period of time.

Most of us will experience an event in our lives that could be considered traumatic. But we won't all be affected the same way. Trauma can happen at any age. And it can affect us at any time, including a long time after the event has happened.

"Covid-19 has destroyed and remoulded me into someone I am still trying to figure out. It has completely changed my outlook on life and it has broken a part of me which I am still working hard to heal, with the help of my colleagues and loved ones." (Taken from the public enquiry).

Moral injury

Moral injury means how you feel when you're put in a situation that goes against your morals, values or beliefs. It's often seen in people who have been in situations where they need to make big decisions about other people's lives.

Survival (Recovery)

Post Covid

Survival and/or Transformation (rebrand?)

- Decent brands

- Legacy brands / Well established brands

- Showcase great work post covid for example: Okehampton Railway Station - Devon, England

(The station closed to regular traffic in 1972, but heritage and occasional mainline services ran from 1997 to 2019. Regular railway services resumed in November 2021).

- Mergers / Partnerships / Investment / Creating jobs / Innovation

- Customer Experience (CX)

- How important Customer Experience is

- Customer Experience department/function within   a business

Courageous Leadership

- Deliberate damage and sabotage to a brand by disgruntled/unhappy customers  or disrupters in order to gain discounts, compensation or free stays ie: customer review sites, social media or speaking out in public places

- Aggressive behaviour towards the staff by customers and/or retaliation by staff

ie: waiting for hot drinks in hospitality or members not receiving a return phone call immediately as they demand (Spa/Wellness - heightened stress levels)

- Gap analysis within companies

- The Law / Lawyers

Build back BETTER

Employees / Staff

What has been happening inside companies / business to make things better - looking after each other and what we can do to take pressure off the government (control all actions and behavior of those under authority)

- Well being

- Mentors / Buddy up

- Structure

- Processes yet freedom

- Fairness

- Personality and Character

- Personalised / small projects and other work opportunities

- Packages offered ie:

discounted private medical cover, private pension, holiday pay, car parking space, on line learning courses, bonus, partners of the business, gym membership discount.

Depending on the role then maybe an advancement, benefits may include a car or accommodation.

Depending on the current economic situation usually due to the governments and poor decision making then to accommodate employees and their families, consider weekly pay or even daily pay which may help through crisis such as Covid.

(New starters may be financially vulnerable so offer allowances in the first month in a new job and different environment).

Think about job sharing and more part time / flexible roles which allows a business to offer more job opportunities

Wellness weekends / outings which may include immediate family, (idea from the Cambridgeshire library exhibit - celebrating locals and the past in Cambridge)

involvement and inclusion with community projects, relocation costs, support with childcare ie: flexible work opportunities, free summer party, Christmas dinner and present! (updated by the founder 20/02/26)

On the flip side...

- Micromanagement, how detrimental and negative this is to individuals and business

- Managing EGO and power trips, brand and reputational damage

- Toxic culture, manipulation, inner circles, set up WhatsApp groups - unregulated - a way to gossip, bully, target others

- Length of service vs experience bought in from previous jobs / life experience

- Interference from others outside of the business

- Breaches

- Easily distracted

- Immersive

- Black uniforms and sad, depressed staff observed in hospitality ie: local pubs, coffee shops (Surrey), Hotels. Suspicious employees/actors perhaps not really in the right sector or placed in the business to deliberately cause disruption and attack

- Corporate tick box exercise

- Article 8, invasion of privacy by staff, employees, character assassination, defamation of character, harassment within the workplace

ACAS

The ACAS code of practice is the minimum set of standards employers must stick to ensure fair workplaces, which are used by tribunals when deciding on cases.

The impact of the Employment Rights Act 2025

Unfair dismissal: The qualifying period is being reduced from two years’ service to just six months. With the risk of a claim increasing, it’s key that new starters’ probation periods are reviewed.

Sexual harassment: Employers must take “all reasonable steps” to prevent sexual harassment of their staff. It’s vital business owners demonstrate a proactive approach, including addressing harassment by third parties.

Cease and desist.

Safe Guarding

In accordance with the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, there is a statutory duty on colleges to “have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children covers more than child protection. The requirements for the College are for policies and procedures that cover arrangements not just for meeting the welfare and safeguarding needs of children, but also the needs of vulnerable adults and young people as well as ensuring appropriate practices for staff recruitment and selection and providing a safe and secure environment in which to study.

Definition:Adults at Risk – anyone aged 18 years of above who is or may be in need of community care services by reason of disability, age or illness; and is or may be unable to take care or unable to protect him or herself against significant harm or exploitation.

Authentic Touch Points - Real Humans, Customer Service / Customer Experience

As a living concept, the pursuit of happiness comes to life in the way we all (passengers, customers, designers), move through our days.

Moments of happiness emerge when a passenger catches their morning train in time to make it to work in a state of calm confidence. Ready to tackle the challenges ahead – ready to spread happiness to their own colleagues and customers.

Navigating an airport without confusion, receiving care that feels attentive and personalized, getting what we need when we need it. None of these instances feels particularly dramatic in the moment. All bring about a net gain in human happiness on the level of the individual and our shared society.

Happiness is a driver of human-centered experiences. And that happiness compounds when it becomes a focal point for experience design and human behavior. Fundamentally, when individual experience sits at the centre of how systems and consumer relationships operate, it leads to better customer experience.

Empowering women for
better water sciences

Screenshot (1)_edited.jpg

When women are left out of water knowledge and decision-making, science itself is incomplete. The UN World Water Development Report 2026, at the core of this year's World Water Day, affirms that empowering women in water sciences is key to achieving truly effective and equitable water governance.

Ensuring women’s participation in water management and governance is a key driver for progress and sustainable development. We must step up efforts to safeguard women and girls’ access to water. This is not only a basic right: when women have equal access to water, everyone benefits.
