Breaking Paradigms in Travel and Tourism – Why Is It So Much Harder Than Everywhere Else?

Having worked with many startups, the majority of which were travel and tourism technology companies, I have noticed some characteristic anomalies. So often, these companies are composed of bright people who naturally lean towards technology being a solution for any problem they see occurring in the marketplace. This thought pattern can be a great skill; to connect technology to a problem and then try to turn that connection into a viable solution, those are skills sorely needed in our industry.

However, it can also have a downside. They simply didn’t understand the nuance and complexity of both the industry and the travel consumer.

The second issue is that because the customer was not involved, the solution they offer may be different from the solution consumers are looking for or find the most appealing.

We find that the early innovative companies get overtaken by another company that perfects their technology and its application. It's a shame because early adopters and innovators should be rewarded for their work, but often that's not how it pans out. The travel and hospitality space has a fair number of examples here as well, acquisitions have become very common as larger players that are struggling to innovate gobble up and modify the work being done by startups.

Qualification-awarding bodies pledge to create new tourism courses

Qualification-awarding bodies NCFE and Pearson have pledged to work with the industry and academics to create new travel and tourism qualifications for 16-19-year-olds.

Representatives from the bodies took part in a webinar with college lecturers to discuss issues facing the sector following the decision to defund Level 3 courses in England.

An education and skills working group, which met for the first time last month at Abta’s offices, also heard that there is an opportunity for new further-education courses in travel and tourism.

Awarding body City & Guilds said in April it will scrap aviation, travel and tourism courses from the end of this year to focus on a smaller number of sectors.

"We have an opportunity to create a fantastic technical education landscape for travel and aviation"

A technical Level 3 course in travel could be created, covering knowledge that a travel consultant needs, such as world geography, sustainability and business.

He said it could be called a Level 3 technical operational entry diploma in travel.

NCFE has invited college lecturers to regional forums from June 12 to assess “a smorgasbord of what we can develop”.

“We are starting to consider what the content will look like and how to future-proof that future skills environment,” she said, pointing to topics such as travel technology, including virtual and augmented reality, facial recognition and AI, as well as big data, sustainability, safety and hygiene.

Courses will be submitted for approval from July 2024, with students starting in September 2026

Air passenger traffic is now at 90.5% of pre-Covid levels.

International traffic climbed 48% year on year, with all markets recording “healthy” growth, with carriers in the Asia-Pacific region continuing to lead the recovery.

“The easing of inflation and rising consumer confidence in most OECD countries combined with declining jet fuel prices, suggests sustained strong air travel demand and moderating cost pressures.”

Call for action as air rage incidents triple

Incidents of air rage tripled last year after the ending of UK Covid-19 travel restrictions led to a surge in overseas trips.

Incidents were reported to include mass brawls, sexual assaults, physical violence, drunken threats, verbal abuse and passengers stripping off.“ It is right that people can be banned from driving, they can be banned from being a company director and they can be banned from football matches. The same should apply for people who behave violently on planes. This power exists in other countries and should be available here too.” “Passengers who are rude or aggressive can be highly disruptive and distressing for cabin crew and fellow travellers. This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and can pose a risk to aircraft safety.

“The aviation industry undertakes a range of measures to tackle this issue and passengers could face criminal charges with severe penalties, even prison, for incidents involving aggressive behaviour.”

TTC Tour Brands Publishes First 'Big Tour Study' of 7,000 Travelers

TTC Tour Brands, the brands that comprise tour operators like Trafalgar, Luxury Gold, Insight Vacations and more, have published its first annual study featuring insight on the latest tour trends, called the ‘Big Tour Study.’

The study surveyed over 7,000 Americans with an average household income of $150,000. Eighty-nine percent of those surveyed were over fifty-five years of age; 67 percent were female; and 56 percent were retired.

The top five takeaways from the Big Tour Study include experiencing hidden gems as well as bucket-list attractions; tours provide assurance while traveling internationally; desire to visit places a traveler hasn’t yet visited is at a high; travelers crave connection with other travelers; and some insights into the travel trends of working professionals.

While travel has long been about visiting landmark attractions (think the Eiffel Tower in Paris), the Big Tour Study has found that its travelers are equally as interested in off-the-beaten path experiences that only a guided tour can provide.

Travelers Want to Discover New Destinations for Themselves.

Seventy percent of respondents believe that experiencing new cultures is a big part of why they book a tour, while 67 percent want to visit a country they’ve never visited before...

EASYJET HOLIDAYS LOOKS TO AI TECHNOLOGY TO CUT HOTEL FOOD WASTE

A pilot scheme to monitor the reduction of food waste in one of easyJet holidays’ most popular hotels has been unveiled.

The budget airline’s tour operating arm aims to support hotels in cutting food waste by using artificial intelligence tools and running more sustainable kitchens.

The initial project at the 510-room Bahia Principe Sunlight Costa Adeje resort in Tenerife comes as part of an initiative with AI developer Winnow.

The pilot is a result of the work the operator undertook in partnership with Oxford University to create the easyJet holidays Sustainable Tourism Programme. “We’re really excited to see what a positive impact a collaboration between a three-year-old holiday business, and 800-year-old academic institution and a revolutionary technology can have.”

“Food waste is a massive contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions and the hospitality sector needs to take action.

At the same time with food inflation at record levels, there is a strong business case for hotels and resorts to tackle it."

THE TECH DISRUPTORS HELPING REBUILD AFRICA'S TOURISM INDUSTRY

While the world was shut down during the Covid pandemic, Africa’s travel industry was busy working on new projects.

Almost exactly three years ago, the UK locked down and by the end of March 2020, more than 100 countries worldwide had instituted full or partial shutdowns. Most travel professionals are keen to forget the catastrophic disruption that the Covid pandemic wreaked upon the industry. Yet a number of African-based entrepreneurs took the opportunity to become disruptors themselves, “During the darkest days of Covid, the Africa Hub was born, emerging as a tool that helped keep agents engaged, forward-looking and positive during lockdown when travel felt so out of reach,

“Covid-19 brought home just how vulnerable the travel sector was; it had grown unchecked for too long and lost sight of how connected it was to the natural world.
“We wanted to build a tool that could increase resilience and strengthen the sector by mainstreaming sustainable operations and enabling even the most ‘green-averse’ properties to improve their impact.”

Europe To Charge Travelers for Entry in 2024

For several years now, we’ve been hearing about the imminent introduction of the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which, at last report, was slated to launch in May of this year. But, the program’s rollout has just been delayed for a fourth time, with an anticipated start date pushed back to sometime in 2024, according to CNN.

It’s a new pre-screening and entry authorization system, similar to the U.S. ESTA and Canadian eTA. It will apply only to passport holders from “third countries” (nations outside the European Union).

Starting sometime next year, an approved ETIAS entry waiver will be required from visa-free travelers entering the E.U. zone for the purposes of tourism, business or transit, authorizing entry and travel within the bloc for 90 days in any 180-day period, and will be good for three years. Travelers will pay a processing fee of €7 (currently $7.43), which, Compared to the United States’ ESTA fee of $21 for two years, is really sort of a bargain.

Make diversity, equity and inclusion central in 2023

Hiring with a more inclusive perspective widens the talent pool and reflects our customers,...

Many businesses are thankfully recognising the benefits of a more diverse workforce, or have been forced to look at a broader spectrum of talent by the current recruitment challenges. Few people would now question the business case for diversity, as multiple studies have shown that it increases productivity, innovation, creativity and decision-making processes. Most importantly however, it encourages employers and colleagues to reflect the wider spectrum of customers.

Women in Travel CIC connects diverse, underserved female talent to employers, tapping into an otherwise invisible pool, that cannot be accessed through usual recruitment avenues. Not only do we provide access to motivated and engaged women, but we also deliver the wrap around care needed to ensure that employers feel supported when exploring less familiar talent and our female candidates feel positive about accessing work. And what they lack in confidence and travel specific experience, they make up in qualities such as resilience, determination and loyalty,

2023 Travel News...

Why the passion economy is the travel trend to get behind in 2023

We’re accustomed to talking about passion in the holiday industry; it’s a sector that people are attracted to work in because of their love of travel, exploring different countries and cultures, as well as the wonderful sense of community. It’s a similar love of travel that motivates our customers to tick off their personal bucket-list of destinations, and why hard-earned breaks are considered such a necessity in the modern world.

That said, events of the last few years have been a catalyst for widespread behavioural changes. Most of us have re-evaluated our lives to some degree, and are prioritising the things that matter to us most. Our loved ones, our interests and our passion points have been brought to the fore, where they rightly should be.

We want to spend our precious leisure time doing the things that excite and inspire us the most. Understanding customers’ passion points and curating travel experiences that speak to those interests will unlock huge commercial potential. Experiences are now as – if not more – important than the actual destination when it comes to choosing a holiday...

We so  strongly believe that this trend will shape the future of travel that we have launched a brand-new passion economy-based travel company...
